The Taekwondo contingent of national athletes was made up of Mr Josef Spiteri 24years Senior category -68kgs and Ms Kimberly Meli 15years – 55 kgs supported by Mr Brian Saliba as National Coach.
On Wednesday 8 July 2009, the Malta Taekwondo Federation with the initiative of the National Coach, Mr. Brian Saliba and the PRO, Mr. Joseph Azzopardi, invited Ms. Adele Muscat, Sports Psychologist and Dr. Maistre Mellilo (Medicine Doctor) for a talk.
This was mainly aimed to the athletes that are going to participate in the UK Open Championship during 11-12 July 2009; however invitation was opened to all clubs’ instructors and assistant instructors. A very good turnout attended the session.
Ms. Muscat emphasized on the mental preparation of the athlete that should have before, during and after the competition. She also pointed out the outcome towards the athlete that the coach, parents and spouses should have during this delicate time.
Dr. Maistre Melillo discussed the current issue - the swine flu. She gave a brief about prevention.
The session was concluded by the National Coach and the President, Mr. Stephen Formosa where they have thanked the speakers and all present for attending. They have encouraged all present athletes for a memory experience and good results.

The Malta Taekwondo Federation held its half yearly Dan Promotion Tests for its affiliated members on Sunday 21 June at St. Martin's College, Swatar. The tests were conducted by the federation's technical board chaired by Mr. Neville Desira as technical director, Mr. Brian Saliba and Mr. Stephen Formosa as members.
Dennis Cilia, Alex Attard and Mario Bonnici set down for the test and all came from Birzebbugia Taekwondo Club (BTC). All applicants were being tested to be promoted to il (1st) Dan. The test commenced by the Technical Director asking the applicants to perform sequences from various Poomsae (patterns). Following this first exercise the 3 students had to perform 3 Patterns of which 1 is compulsory, 1 to be chosen by the board & the last 1 to be chosen by the student with the exception of the 2 already performed. During the next exercises the students had to perform several step-sparring exercises in which they had to apply the basic techniques in their native form countering with hand strikes and kicks. In the successive exercise the students had to demonstrate several self-defense situation in an unarmed combat situation, where they had to tackle their opponent and try to immobilize him. A demonstration of destructive power had to be fulfilled by the destruction of wooden boards. The last physical test was the contest sparring (Kyorugi) where each student had to sparr against the other 2 with intervals of 20 seconds for 2 minutes.
The most intensive phase was the theoretical followed by an interview. During this phase each student was asked several questions about Taekwondo in general, about the competition (setup, rules and refereeing), and moreover about their expectations once the 1st Dan level is achieved. All 3 students passed their grading test with desirable results.

The MTF President Mr Stephen Formosa presented trophies and certificates to the participants and congratulated the athletes on the good level and sportive spirit showed in this competition.
He thanked the parents and other members of MTF for their support and participation to make this event a successful one.
Mr Formosa concluded by mentioning the achievement of Dott Christopher Vella by winning a gold medal in Sardinia Taekwondo championships this month where he competed in a technical competition. He also wished good luck to the Taekwondo athletes that are to participate in the 12th British Open that will be held in London in July 2009.
After the presentation various training equipment was freely distributed to all registered Taekwondo clubs by the Malta Taekwondo Federation as an initiative to support the local clubs.
Josianne Formosa, Neville Desira, Brian Saliba, Stephen Formosa, Joseph Schembri and Joseph Azzopardi were presented with Dan certificates issued from the European Taekwondo Union as a gesture of solidarity.

Christopher Vella, former president of the Maltese Taekwondo Federation currently residing in Luxembourg, has earned a gold medal in an international competition organised by the Sardinian Taekwondo Federation last Saturday (2nd May) in Olbia, Sardinia. Vella competed in the 31-40 age category in the technical competition organised in accordance with the WTF rules of this competition. His category was comprised of 6 athletes hailing from Sardinia, mainland Italy, Belgium and Luxembourg. The competition was comprised of 2 rounds of performances with Vella scoring over 9 points in both rounds, edging his contestants in both occasions.

The Malta Taekwondo Federation in conjuction with the National Coach held a Kyorugi competition at St Martin's College Gym in Swatar on 31st March 2009 for the MTF National Elite Athletes and other athletes that have been attending the MTF sponsored & organised Kyorugi training sessions.
Many athletes from various local Taekwondo clubs participated in this competition with a difference as their was no entry fees charged and no awards given.The Athletes had the chance to show their sparring skills and also participating in more than 1 bout in a full setup including mats,scoring system,marshals,judges and referees.
The National Coach Mr Brian Saliba and the President Mr Stephen Formosa commented favourable to the good sparring level shown and informed the athletes about the MTF plans and international competition participation for the year 2009.
Sharelle Zammit who is 9 years old, attends Sacred Heart School in St. Julians did an English Speaking Board Examination on the 16th of March. For this exam the girls had to choose a subject that like and talk about it for approximately 3 minutes.
Sharelle chose to talk about the sport that she has been training for almost 5 years – Tae Kwon Do. This currently red tab girl talked about different items regarding Tae Kwon Do like what they wear for training what type of self defense positions, it being an Olympic sport and how many clubs there are in Malta. She also promoted the MTF website by stating that if anyone present would like any information regarding Tae Kwon Do to visit this website!
Apart from the information she gave she also demonstrated the IL Jang (poomsae 1) and different types of blocks, kicks & punches having other students getting involved also.
This talk was in front of an audience of other girls, different teachers and the examiner who comes from England purposely for this exam. The students are graded on performance, information gathered and answering of questions.
There are 5 different grades for this exam which are pass, pass+, credit, credit+ and distinction. We are very happy to say that Sharelle got a Credit+ for her talk.
This goes to show that even if you are the shyest person on earth when talking about something you love you will always get the best results.

The Malta Taekwondo Federation held a National Poomsae competition on 1st March 2009 at the St Martin’s College (SMC) Gym in Swatar.Present for this event was Mr Mark Cutajar, MOC Director of Sports who explained that it was in this very gym at SMC that he started his career of teaching sports. Mr Cutajar also mentioned the importance to take sports seriously and that it also entails sacrifices to achieve good performances and results.
After the competition, Mr Stephen Formosa President of the Malta Taekwondo Federation thanked Mr Mark Cutajar for his presence and all the athletes for the sportsmanship and the good level shown during this event. Also, he mentioned the initiatiave taken on a club level by Birzebbugia Taekwondo Club where this club participated with Ms. Maria Minuti and Mr. Dennis Cilia in the Poomsae Championships held in Sindelfingen- Germany during December 2008. They won bronze and gold respectively.
The Malta Taekwondo Federation honoured Dr Chris Vella who was the former MTF President as a Hononary President for his dedication and continuous support to the local Taekwondo. He was presented with a memento for his participation in the 3rd World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Turkey being the first time that the MTF has participate in such a big event. During his 1 week stay in Malta. Dr. Vella conducted 2 seminars where he updated the local practitioners with new updates regarding the development of the Poomsae, where he even shared his experience of his participation in the world championships.
Mr. Joseph Azzopardi supported our two elite athletes, Kimberly Meli and Josef Spiteri with a DaeDo Taekwondo uniform each.

CYPRUS OPEN
The Malta Taekwondo Federation have participated in the Cypriot Taekwondo International Championships held in Nicosia, Cyprus on the 19th December 2008.
The MTF contingent that left for Cyprus were namely President Mr Stephen Formosa, PRO Mr Joseph Azzopardi, National Coach Mr
Brian Saliba & National Athlete Ms Kimberly Meli who participated in the -58 kgs weight category. Josef Spiteri was supposed to compete in the seniors -67kgs male category however unfortunately he did not participate due to an ankle injury.
The countries that participated in this event were Russia, Cyprus, Greece, Israel, Nigeria & Malta where most of them fielded their best athletes for the competition in both male & female weight categories. International Referees controlled the bouts with the use of the latest points system on the electronic body protectors.
Ms Kimberly Meli although younger in age & rank was classified 3rd place in the -58kg category after loosing the bout to the Cypriot female counterpart who is ranked as the 5th European taekwondo athlete in her respective category.
Ms Kimberly Meli is currently on the MOC Elite athlete programmed.
During the event the MTF President Mr Stephen Formosa was interviewed by a leading Cypriot TV station were he showed his appreciation towards Mr Phivos Christou ETU Treasurer for his ongoing support & cooperation with the MTF & for the invitation to participate in this international championship.
At the end of the event Mr Formosa was invited by Mr Phivos Christou to present the trophies to the winners.
During the visit in Cyprus the MTF officials met Mr Anthanasios Pragalos ETU President where the MTF discussed the possible participation in the World Taekwondo Championships in November 2009.
The officials later visited the Cypriot Olympic Committee headquarters in Nicosia & viewed the newly allotted offices to all its sport federations & met with Cypriot Olympic Committee members & officials from the Cypriot Taekwondo Federation.
3rd WORLD POOMSAE CHAMPIONSHIPS - TURKEY
Malta has participated in the 3rd World Championships of Taekwondo Poomsae (Technical competition) held in Ankara, Turkey. The Malta Taekwondo Federation has been represented by Christopher Vella who competed in the Senior 2 Category (31-40 years). Vella was eliminated in the preliminary round when he scored 7.26 points for his performance. He was close to reaching the semi-final round, needing only 0.31 points in order to reach the competitors making it to the semi-final stage. Although Taekwondo poomsae (technical form) as a competitive event has long been organised in Europe by the European Taekwondo Union, it has only recently been adopted by the World Taekwondo Federation on a global scale. Both of the first two editions of this competition have been held in Korea and this was the first edition organised outside Korea.
The Malta Taekwondo Federation held another event on its calender the National Kyurugi championships on Sunday 8th November in the gym at St Martins College,Swatar.
Athletes aged between 6 - 48 years participated from all the local Taekwondo clubs and competed in 13 categories.
The winners were the following :

T.D.C Taekwondo Dragon Club Instructor Stephen formosa won 3 categories ; Pewee B female Lynsey Fenech, Senior C -72 Kgs Ian Gatt, Senior A Joseph Spiteri.
LINJOE TAEKWONDO Club Instructor Joe Schembri won 1 category : Cadet B + 58 Kgs Matthias Briffa
B.T.C. Birzebbugia Taekwondo Club instructor Neville desira won in 1 category : Cadet B -42 kgs Bjorn Piscopo
Cypriot Taekwondo Athlete Mr Giorgos Charambous accompanied by the Cypriot National Coach Mr Panikos Loizou came over especially for this competition but lost by 4- 6 to Malta Taekwondo National Athlete Joseph Spiteri an athlete from T.D.C.
After the presentation of trophies the MTF President Mr Stephen Formosa thanked all the athletes for the good level that was displayed & also their parents for their lively support throughout the competition.
Mr Formosa concluded by showing his appreciation to Mr Panikos Lasoiu who was instrumental in the referreeing aspect of the competition,the organisers,referees,judges & St Martins College for the premises.
The Malta Taekwondo Federation National Coach Mr Brian Saliba who also have the task of training our Elite Taekwondo Athletes is presently attending the WTF-KHU Taekwondo coaching seminar being held at the Kukkuwon Taekwo
ndo University in Gangnam Seoul Korea.
During this intensive 3 week course sponsored by the World Taekwondo Federation reform fund Mr Saliba is participating together with 14 other coaches from different countries worldwide and also had the opportunity to meet personally the president of the Kukkiwon University Mr Woon Kyu Uhm.
The Malta Taekwondo Federation National Elite Athletes competed in the 11th UTF British International Open held in London on the 11th July 2008.
The National team comprised of Mr Brian Saliba as National Coach, and two athletes namely the experienced Josef Spiteri of Dragon Taekwondo Club and Kimberly Meli a young promising athlete of St Martins Taekwondo Academy.
Josef Spiteri took part in the Seniors 'A' Class -67Kg (Male)and Kimberly in the Juniors 'B' Class -63kg (female) Both athletes monitored their weight accordingly as in fact resulted on the official day of weigh-in.
Kimberly Meli,aged 14years started her International bout on Saturday 12 July and her category meant that she could be up against athletes from the age of 14 to 17. In her first match she came up against a british athlete and although still lacking international competitive experience,Kimberly performed well holding her opponent to a 2-2 draw but unfortunatly in the last round lost with"sudden death" system that meant who scored the first point in the bout be declared the winner.
On Sunday it was Joseph’s turn. His experience in this field clearly showed both pre and during the competition bouts. Joseph was able to maintain that spirit throughout the bouts and was able to win his first two matches but lost narrowly in the third match against Turkey in the semi-finals earning Joseph a well deserved bronze medal.
The Malta Taekwondo Federation held the National Kyurugi Competition on Sunday 8th June 2008 at St Martins College in Swatar and athletes from all the local taekwondo clubs participated in this event.
The winners of this competition were:
Pewee section :Lynsey Fenech,Sharell Zammit & Joel Genuis, Cadets section : Bradley Desira & Jamie Maistre Melillo, Juniors section : Jessica Muscat, Seniors section : Jonathan Aristhene.
This event came to a close by an exibition bout between MTF National athlete Kimberly Meli & Jonathan Aristhene.
The President Mr Stephen Formosa thanked the MTF Committee & judges for the organisation & commented favourably about the good level & fighting spirit shown by the athletes in this event.
